This collection is named for the Isthmus of Kra, the narrow strip of land connecting the Malay Peninsula to mainland Asia. The Andaman Sea lies to its west, and the Gulf of Thailand to the east.
Isthmus showcases the fusion of cultures in the Southeast Asian region. The embellishment of each item features floral motifs commonly found in traditional Southeast Asian woodcarving.
From as early as the 4th century BC, Hellenistic influence made its way from the Mediterranean coast along the fabled Silk Road into the Indus Valley, and from there as far as Southeast Asia. Evidence of this can be seen in the startlingly similar scrolled leaf motif that occurs in the art of classical Mediterranean, Central Asian, Indian and Southeast Asian cultures.
Isthmus Home 2
Continuing its celebration of eclectic cultural influences of Southeast Asian craft, Royal Selangor's Isthmus collection sees new designs to its line of homeware in 2008.
Additions to the range are a plate, a clock, two tea caddies and four photoframes. Complementing the rest of the collection, the exotic motifs in simple classical shapes fit comfortably in any eclectic setting. Items such as the plate, clock and tea caddy have ample engraving space and are ideal as gifts.
Isthmus Home
A marriage of these various styles, Isthmus Home's exuberant foliate motif decorates a collection of home accessories and tableware comprising tankards, tumbler, platter, pitcher, bowl, tray, vase, candlestand and trinket box.
Isthmus Black Gold
Decorated with an exuberant foliate motif, Isthmus Black Gold renews the desk accessories collection with the black and gold finishing.
Using Royal Selangor's Metalesce technique, the black graphite coating is sprayed onto the surface and fuses seamlessly with pewter. Each item is crafted in pewter with and coated black with 24k gold embellishment on the foliate motif. Engraving on the black surface will reveal the pewter lustre beneath creating contrast. |
